Global Technology Context 

The Global Technology (GT) team at Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW) is on a multi-year journey to modernize technical and digital products and platforms across all business lines. This role demands a visionary leader with a technical understanding of the range of Resort Operations business products in solving complex business challenges. Success as a leader in recruiting, developing, and retaining technical talent on high performing teams is required. The incumbent is a proven thought leader, a consensus builder, and an integrator of people, processes, and technology. 

Position Summary

As a member of the professional staff, contributes a high level of specialized knowledge and skill in a discipline (e.g., Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Inventory, Revenue Management, Information Resources, Operations Planning & Support, Sales & Marketing) area to support department and/or function objectives. Generally, works with considerable independence, developing operating plans and related operational processes for own department in alignment with broader business objectives.

Specific Job Summary

The Director, Data Engineer, reporting the AVP, Enterprise Platform Owner, is a technical role that is accountable for the engineering of solutions for data and analytics capabilities within an Application Platform that will be delivered via a supplier. This role requires a high level of specialized knowledge and skill in Information Technology (IT) for applications that support a single MVW Business Unit.

This role is pivotal in driving our data strategy, transforming our technology stack, and ensuring the seamless integration and maintenance of our data systems. This role utilizes technologies, procedures, methodologies, quality standards, and security protocols that align with Enterprise Architecture and Data Architecture standards or project-specific architectural decisions. This position prepares technical engineering documents per the MVW Software Development Lifecycle that describe in technical terms and diagrams what needs to be delivered by a supplier. 

During the development phase, this position functions as a technical expert providing oversight of the supplier work to ensure delivered solutions align to what was engineered and meets MVW standards and quality expectations.

  • Technical Requirements: Collaborates with business stakeholders to derive technical requirements from business needs.
  • Solution Design: Architects and designs scalable, efficient, and secure data solutions.
  • Deployment: Leads the deployment of data solutions, ensuring they meet performance and reliability standards.
  • Maintenance: Oversees the maintenance and optimization of data systems.
  • Transformation: Drives the transformation to new technologies and architectures, ensuring alignment with business goals.
  • Leadership: Mentors and lead a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, analytics, and business units, to ensure cohesive data strategies.
  • Compliance: Ensures all data solutions comply with industry standards and regulations.
  • Innovation: Explores and implement new tools, techniques, and methodologies to enhance data engineering practices.
  • Vendor Management: Manages relationships with vendors, including selection, contract negotiation, and performance evaluation.
  • Security: Partners with security and data privacy teams to implement measures protecting data and ensuring system safety from cyber threats.
  • Change Management: Drives change management initiatives to ensure smooth adoption of new systems and processes across the organization.
  • Budget Management: Develops and manage the data engineering team budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions that deliver value to the business.
  • Technical Oversight: Provides technical oversight during the development phase to ensure delivered solutions align with engineered specifications and meet quality expectations.
  • Data Pipeline Design: Designs efficient data pipelines (ETLs) that integrate data from various sources into the data warehouse.
  • Documentation: Prepares technical engineering documents that describe in technical terms and diagrams what needs to be delivered by suppliers.

Candidate Profile

Successful candidates should possess knowledge and experience and demonstrate strong leadership and relationship skills as follows:

Generally, a professional position with specific knowledge and experience in a discipline (e.g., Accounting, Human Resources, Information Technology) as well as associate management experience.  College degree and/or relevant experience typically required.

Specific Candidate Profile

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required in technology, engineering, computer science, or statistical/math sciences or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

Experience

  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in technology data and analytics development including experience operating in a globally sourced operating model leveraging suppliers for data and analytics services.
  • Technical knowledge and experience in managing service delivery on data and analytics platforms, custom database development or coding languages.
  • Experience working in a global sourcing model is a plus.
  • Strong background in data engineering, architecture, and leadership, with expertise in Oracle, SQL, AWS Redshift, and Informatica.
  • Experience in cloud migration and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Oracle ADW, Redshift, Heroku).
  • Experience with additional data tools and technologies (e.g. Python).
  • Experience in driving organizational change and leading technology transformations.

Skills/Attributes

  • Requires a high level of specialized knowledge and skill in Information Technology (IT) for Data Services applications.
  • Able to exhibit a progression of increasingly complex applications and successfully lead and deliver complex IT projects. 
  • Knowledge of data governance and security best practices.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and continuous integration.
  • Proven ability to apply advanced analytical, conceptual strategic planning, and execution skills to solve complex technical challenges.
  • Expert level understanding of ETL fundamentals and building efficient data pipelines.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into business-friendly language.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team, manage projects, and drive strategic initiatives.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing business needs.
